Raila Odinga Down With COVID-19: Time To End Political Gatherings?

Kenya

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has become the first high-profile figure in Kenya to contract COVID-19 after days of speculations as he remained admitted at the Nairobi Hospital. Raila had checked into the hospital complaining of fatigue.

The confirmation that the former premier is down with the deadly virus comes at a time he and other politicians including Deputy President William Ruto have been traversing the country holding massive political meetings with zero Covid-19 protocols.

President Uhuru Kenyatta had suspended political meetings across the country for a period of 60 days to tame the spread of the deadly virus but became among those who led the way in breaking the same directive he had given. Kenya for you.

As much as we should sympathize with the former Prime Minister, we should call him out for participating in the spreading of the virus through massive political meetings where people overlooked all the Covid-19 protocols. It is time to change this behavior.

The country has been witnessing a surge in new Covid-19 infections in what the Ministry of Health has described as a third wave that might be worse than the other two waves. The positivity rate has been rising too, hitting 14 percent on Wednesday.

Covid-19 is real. There is a reason why so many people have died around the world. There is a reason why Italy was among the worst-hit countries with Covid-19 in the world. There is a reason why the World Health Organization (WHO) announced it as a global pandemic.

President Uhuru Kenyatta should for once be firm about his declarations. He cannot be issuing instructions with one mouth and doing the opposite in full glaring of cameras. We should stop being hypocrites.
