Mount Nyiragongo erupted on Saturday night getting over 2,000,000 residents of Goma (DRC) off guard.
The last mount Nyiragongo erupted was in 2002 where it killed 250 people within 10 minutes and left over 150,000 homeless.
The eruption on Saturday was not anticipated as people had forgotten about it and were going on with their lives.
Thousands of people could be seen fleeing their homes, majority on foot towards Rwanda.
Within an hour, the Lava had already reached the airport, making it difficult for planes to land for evacuation. The government had no plans.
As of Sunday morning, authorities in Goma said that the lava has started “slowing down” and that the mountain had “stopped” throwing “fireworks into the air.
