Safaricom Introduces eSIM Support: Here Is How To Get One

Kenya’s telecommunications giant, Safaricom has finally introduced eSIM support for its customers. The introduction comes after an introduction of the same in the country by Jamii Telecom’s Faiba 4G network back in January this year.

eSIM, a short for an Embedded Subscriber Identity Module; or simply an Embedded SIM card, is finally out in the Kenyan market after a long wait from a significant number of Kenyans.

There are many devices that come with eSIM’s including Google Pixels, Huawei and Motorola smartphones, Windows tablets, iPad, and Apple Watches.

Safaricom has listed a few smartphones as supporting their network for now such as:

  1. iPhone SE 2020, iPhone X, iPhone Xs, iPhone 11, iPhone 12
  2. Samsung Galaxy S21, Galaxy Z Fold, Galaxy NOTE 20

With e-SIM technology beginning to take shape within and without Kenya, and to keep up with the ever-changing trends, smartphone makers are racing against time to ensure that more new gadgets come with an embedded SIM.

With an eSIM, all you need is some profile setting and you’re ready to use a particular network. Profile setting is mainly provided by the carrier in form of a QR code you can scan.

After scanning the code, the phone will activate the eSIM, and you are able to access the network e.g. Safaricom. You are free to change the network the eSIM is accessing to any other networks supporting eSIM’s.

How to get Safaricom’s e-SIM

  1. Visit a Safaricom Shop with a supported device
  2. Scan the QR code you’ll be given by Safaricom with your support advice
  3. Your device will download and install the profile setting and set up the Safaricom Network on your eSIM.
  4. Your eSIM will now be ready for use.

The benefits of using an eSIM are quite vast including;

  1. Conveniently having two networks running at once for iPhone users.
  2. Easily switching between networks e.g. you can switch between Faiba and Safaricom.
  3. Multiple data plans for those who pay monthly for data plans.
  4. For those who travel a lot, you can avoid paying a lot of cash when roaming by just buying an eSIM for whichever network of the country you’re traveling to.
