Retired Headteachers To Sign A Two-Year Contract Extension

TSC KNUT

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has disclosed an offer to school headteachers who are retiring to sign an extension of one and half year contract will.

According to the TSC, school heads who are retiring this year as of June 30th have been offered a chance to extend their contract terms for one and a half years.

However, according to the commission, the offer is not a mandatory one but one that will be optional for heads of schools who are retiring.

Early this year, TSC recruited 2,111 deputy headteachers to the position of headteachers now categorized under grade C5.

In 2020, the Kenya Union of Post-Primary (KUPPET) revealed that at least 25,000 teachers are above 59 years and were set to retire in June 2021.

This comes after a section of unemployed teachers cried foul over the recent vacancies announced by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). They claimed that the job requirements favored its interns, which disadvantaged them during the selection phase.

According to the report, unemployed teachers and those in the private sector accused the commission of favoring its interns. They claimed that in the requirements, scoring marks for interns were much higher than those of older unemployed individuals.

This comes even as those awarded to unemployed teachers who graduated from college way earlier dipped from 50 percent to 25 percent.

“Internship is meant to make someone gain experience. Is it to say that only public schools can give that experience? Why are teachers disadvantaged for working in a private institution serving public students?” Questioned a teacher.

TSC announced the 10,000 teaching jobs towards the end of June to address the shortage of tutors in schools.
