Teachers are entitled to different types of allowances especially those who are employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) or deployed based on higher qualifications.
The allowances encompass extra income paid to teachers employed on a permanent and pensionable basis alongside their monthly salaries.
Those paid by TSC are varied based on the location of one’s workstation, responsibilities dedicated in the teacher’s latest appointment letters, and the types of learners handled, whether special needs learners or irregular one.
This is unlike the teacher’s basic salary, which cuts across all the teachers in a particular job or group.
Allowances paid to teachers are classified as remunerative or reimbursable. Remunerative allowances are paid together with teachers’ salary while reimbursable are refundable upon application.

House allowance is paid monthly to all teachers. It is paid on two criteria, job grade and workstation. Teachers in higher job groups earn a higher rate than those in the lower cadre.
The Salaries and Remuneration Commission, SRC, has also clustered teachers’ workstations into four regions.
TSC pays monthly hardship allowance to teachers working in areas prone to insecurity and high risk of harsh climate conditions.
The Commission has designated various allowances for hardship. These are paid according to a teacher’s grade. Those in higher grades earn more than their counterparts in the lower cadre.
Commuter allowances are paid to all teachers every month. This is solely depending on the teacher’s job group.
Leave allowances are paid annually together with the January salary of proceeding yearly. It is given as per a teacher’s grade with those in higher job grades earning more.
Responsibility allowances are paid to headteachers, deputy headteachers, and senior teachers at job group K and below.
Special duty allowances are paid to teachers below group M appointed to administrative posts by the commission and deployed in arid and semi-arid.

Readers’ allowances are paid to visually impaired teachers who have engaged a reader whose minimum qualification is not below KCSE or KCE Division III. They are paid at a fixed rate determined from time to time by the commission.
