Has The Deputy Jesus Of Kenya Been Fired?

He was baptized “Deputy Jesus” by Kenyans but his real name is Ezekiel Mutua, the man who has been at the helm of the Kenya Film and Classification Board (KFCB). He has been a friend to a few but an enemy to many, especially musicians.

Some called him the “Moral Cop” for he was already ready to criticize anything he considered immoral or not in line with family values. Some like Eric Omondi have been arrested and some musicians have had their songs banned. He kept them in check.

There were rumors that his term at the helm of the “moral office” had ended but he was reluctant to leave. And on Friday, word came out that he had been removed from the position by the Cabinet Secretary of ICT Joe Mucheru. But is it true?

“Ezekiel Mutua unlawfully removed by the CS Mucheru as the CEO after being lawfully appointed by the Board. Laws are mere suggestions for this administration,” said Mutula Kilonzo Junior, the Senator for Makueni County through his Twitter handle.

Some Kenyans online have warmed up to the news but some are standing with Ezekiel Mutua. It appears the man also had support especially from parents and men of faith. But again, Ezekiel has dismissed the news of his “firing” as fake.

“My attention has been drawn to reports on social media to the effect that I have been fired as CEO of KFCB. PLEASE IGNORE such malicious rumors. I am not aware of such developments and there can be no grain of truth in them as there is no vacancy in the office of the CEO of KFCB,” he said in a tweet.
