Cases of cybercrime are on the rise in Kenya. It is a common thing for people to steal other people’s identities and using them to commit a crime. This has landed so many people behind bars without them having committed any crime.
Criminals are currently using stolen IDs to register phone numbers and then using them to commit a crime. Some are even kidnapping people and using the same number to call for ransom and then abandon them leading to the arrest of wrong people.

Safaricom has not made it easy for customers to check how many phone numbers are registered using their IDs. All one has to do is to dial *106# and follow the prompts as shown.
Clicking on Option 1, Safaricom immediately gives one the numbers registered using their ID and sends them an SMS as immediately too. The same shortcode enables one to report an unknown number, check reported numbers, cancel reported numbers among others.

At the same time, Safaricom introduced a feature that alerts a customer when someone tries to register a new SIM card using their ID number. This will help the customer verify whether it is him/her trying to register for a new SIM or a fraud.
In the new feature, when one tries to register a new SIM card using a customer’s ID, the customer will receive an SMS through the number 707. The SMS will have two options; YES and NO. If the customer is the one trying to register a new SIM, they will reply with YES and if not, then they will press NO for the registration to be stopped.
