16-Year-Old Girl Admitted in Kitui After Abortion Attempt

Abortion

A 16-year-old class eight pupil is currently admitted at a Kitui hospital, following a botched abortion attempt over the weekend. The girl delivered a 5-month lifeless male fetus, after being rushed to Mumoni Health Center in Kitui county.

According to the victim’s mother, her daughter had complained of severe abdominal pains, prompting her to rush the minor to the hospital. After interrogation, the girl revealed that her school headteacher who was responsible for the pregnancy had taken her to a private clinic in Ishiara, last Saturday, February 19th, 2022, where she was given some tablets and asked to swallow.

What followed were severe abdominal pains that led to her hospitalization. Detectives have since launched a manhunt for the headteacher who has gone missing and the owner of the private clinic who conducted the botched abortion.

This is not the first heinous act whereby a teacher is being found to have defiled a school-going child. On this one, both the mischievous school head and the reckless clinician must be brought to book. There are no two ways about it.

Who else is to be trusted with our children if they still exist such unprofessional elements in our systems? A teacher defiling a pupil? This is not someone who is new to the teaching profession. The imbecile has been in the profession since time immemorial and has even managed to get a promotion and he is now a school head. How he found himself in that position is another subject that needs to be thoroughly investigated.

The future of this country depends on how we handle our children. School-going children need utmost protection and proper treatment from both their parents and teachers. There have been incidences whereby a child is defiled by either a parent or a teacher, but the devilish act remains unreported. The perpetrators collude with some compromised individuals and somehow manage to keep it a secret for some time.

The plight of psychologically tortured children in Kenya is alarming. More stringent measures have been put in place by the government in collaboration with non-governmental organizations to curb child abuse and defilement. Always feel free to reach out to the nearest police station on time so that perpetrators can face the full force of the law.
