Viewers on DStv can look forward to the second round of the 2022 MotoGP World Championship, the Grand Prix of Indonesia, live from the Mandalika International Street Circuit in Central Lombok on the morning of Sunday 20 March 2022.
The season got underway with a great race in Qatar earlier this month, as Italian Enea ‘The Beast’ Bastianini claimed a surprise victory on the Gresini Racing Ducati. The Italian, in his second season in the elite, paid tribute to the team’s founder Fausto Gresini, a double 125cc world champion in the 1980s who recently passed away at the age of 60.
“I dedicate this victory to Fausto. He pushed me a lot from the skies, and it’s fantastic for all the team. I think we’ve all been crying,” said Bastianini.
The season opener was also a good day for South African Brad Binder and the Red Bull KTM team, who have traditionally struggled at the Middle Eastern circuit in the past but came home for a fine second-place finish – perhaps laying the foundation for a campaign in which they challenge for top honors.
“I really do believe that we have got what it takes to run with the top boys week-in and week-out. Our bike is working incredibly well and more than anything I am confident with the front-end,” said Binder. “There are some improvements that we can make on the rear and when we do, I think it is going to give us a really, really strong package.”
Repsol Honda also looked to have returned to competitiveness, with Pol Espargaro and Marc Marquez coming home in third and fifth respectively. “At the end, I’m happy because this is a clear message that Honda is back, not just with Marc [Marquez], but with me,” said Espargaro.
Aside from Bastianini’s victory, Ducati will be looking to bounce back after a tough time in Qatar. Jack Miller, for example, should be far more competitive this weekend after suffering from an electronic issue in the season opener.
“From the get-go, the bike wasn’t fantastic, there was something missing in the electronics,” Miller explained. “The bike was quite lost, let’s say. I had 100 percent power in some very strange points of the track and then coming onto the front straight, I had no power.”
The Grand Prix of Indonesia is returning to the MotoGP circuit for the first time in 25 years. Only two previous Indonesian races have been held – in 1996 and 1997 at the Sentul International Circuit, won by Mick Doohan (Honda) and Tadayuki Okada (Honda) respectively.
