The 27km Nairobi Expressway will be opened to the public on 9th April 2022.
The multi-billion-road, which runs from Mlolongo through the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Westland’s area along Waiyaki Way, is expected to play a key role in decongesting the city, boosting the economy of the country by saving millions of shillings lost in traffic every year.
For the categories of people who will use the Expressway, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has already started issuing the electronic pass from its offices next to Ramptons.
It’s advisable to take the chance now and get your gadgets installed before the rush starts on 9th April.
It will take you a maximum of five minutes to get your gadget fixed on your car. You will be required to fill out the attached form. Also, carry with you the following for registration purposes;
- Original and copy of Logbook
- Original and copy of ID/Passport
- 5,000 shillings in cash or card
The 5000 shillings will be loaded for you to use as toll fees once they open.

Construction of the Nairobi Expressway, which started in 2020, has come at a cost for businesses and residents along Mombasa Road, with motorists enduring traffic. However, thousands of people have been employed since its construction commenced.
It includes a 2.5-meter emergency lane on the outer shoulder of either carriageway that will be used by emergency response vehicles to respond to emergencies in the shortest time possible.
The Expressway, which is the first to be built in East and Central Africa and the second largest toll road in Africa after the Dakar Toll Highway in Senegal, is a beautiful piece of work with trees and flowers planted along the road.
