A new guideline by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), is set to allow Kenyans to own up to 10 sim cards.
The Kenya Information and Communication Regulation 2022 which was published n Tuesday 10th, 2022, states that all Kenyans, except in the case of a child, shall register a maximum of 10 sim cards.
The new regulations which are currently under public participation until May 31, 2022, are expected to come into play six months after the publication of the final draft.
Another proposition of the draft regulation states that children shall upon the attainment of the adult age of 18, be required to regularize their registration details within a period of three months.
The new draft regulation bars subscribers from registering SIM cards on behalf of others but goes ahead to suggest that parents who desire to register a sim card on behalf of their children shall provide both their identification documents as well as that of the child seeking the sim card.
Meanwhile, the regulation will give the operators the power to deactivate subscriptions if requested by the subscribers, in case they gave wrong information during the registration process.
The operators and agents will also be tasked with the responsibility of verifying the documentation provided with penalties in case of non-compliance and fines for subscribers who shall give fake identification details.
Those who will not act according to the regulations, according to the draft will face the consequences including fines that will be prescribed by the Communication Authority of Kenya (CA).
Currently Kenyans, Kenyans can only register a maximum of five sim cards across all networks.
