Dear Wafula Chebukati, Our Eyes Are On You

Dear Wafula Chebukati,

I hope this open letter finds you well as you peruse Abraham Lincoln’s quote on democracy and what it means.

Bwana Chebukati, as you may be aware, the elections are coming. And they are coming fast. Not by-elections, but general elections.

Bwana Chebukati, as you may also be aware, you are the Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). In simple terms, you are the man.

Bwana Chebukati, I am not sure, however, whether you are aware that you are the man whose the whole country is focused on. You are the man who will either take us back to 2007/08 or set an example of how elections should be conducted.

I am aware that your dear wife requested the whole country to pray for you. I rarely go to Church but I will ask the Man Above to see whether He has your name on the list and whether he has received any prayers.

But, Bwana Chebukati, I don’t think you need any special prayers. If you do what is right, and stand for the truth and the foundations of democracy, you won’t need any special prayers for protection. Kenyans will protect you.

Something you should know, Bwana Chebukati, is that the whole nation is looking up to you to give them a credible election. You cannot afford to be excited with cameras to give statements that will clearly place you where your mouth is.

If you have your preferred candidate, don’t show it openly. Let it be your secret till death. If you hate any of the candidates, don’t show it. Let it be your secret till death. You are like a parent right now who should love all his kids whether they are thieves, witches, or pastors.

It is not a must you talk. And if you must, please, think of the repercussions. Do not talk then think later but think then talk later. This country cannot afford another messed-up election. Do not be that man who will take us back.

Let me tell you something Bwana Chebukati, the Man of the Moment, many Kenyans don’t care about this election. We just want it over and gone. We want our normal lives back. Give us a credible election on round on so that we go back to our miserable lives.

We are hungry and angry, our children are not in school because we have no school fees, and our businesses are shutting down because clients are canceling contracts, trust me Bwana Chebukati, we care less who wins. We just want to live.

I know you are busy and might not read this. I will tag your employer, IEBC and if there is any kind of intern, he or she will read it on your behalf.

Have a good day Bwana. Vaa sweta. We need you in good health.
