Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has released the official names of a nationwide recruiting drive in an effort to alleviate the critical tutor shortage in schools. In order to increase transparency in the hiring process, TSC is mandated to post the names of teachers who will be shortlisted on its official website.

According to TSC, merit lists for each county can be accessed at the county headquarters. These lists are very instrumental during this recruitment exercise since they make one make a proper decision as far as attending interviews is concerned.

The commission indicated that there are 5,000 new openings and an additional 8,230 positions to replace teachers who have left the service as a result of attrition. All teachers who are hired will serve under permanent and pensionable employment terms.

Of the 5, 000 vacancies, 3, 972 will be filled by recruits for secondary schools, 28 for teacher training colleges, and 1,000 positions are set aside for primary school teachers. 6, 539 posts will be for primary and 1, 691 posts for secondary schools.

“Interested and qualified candidates should submit their applications online through the Teachers Service Commission’s website, www.tsc.go.ke under ‘Careers or teachersonline.tsc.go.ke not later than 7 July 2022,” the Commission said.

Currently, TSC has a total 0f 345,316 teachers on its payroll. Of this, 228,126 are primary school teachers, 116,024 are secondary school teachers and 1,166 are TTC tutors. Currently, TSC is still grappling with a teacher shortage and it requires a total of 114,581 teachers to plug the shortage.

A total of 3,972 of the newly hired teachers will be tasked with assisting President Uhuru Kenyatta’s 100% transition policy by working in a variety of secondary schools.

At least 300,000 teachers have been trained by yet to be employed by TSC. However, TSC employs 10,000 teachers annually which is too small compared to the existing shortage as well as 10,000 teachers who exit the service each year.
