The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, set minimum requirements for teachers. For you to be considered for employment as a primary teacher in Kenya, you have to satisfy all TSC requirements for primary teachers
If you are intending to pursue a Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE), You should realize that the Kenyan Government has since abolished the P1 Training Course and replaced it with DPTE. This new course comes with new joining requirements.
It is, therefore, necessary for you to know the joining and TSC requirements before enrolling for this Course
The entry requirements shall be C Plain in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination (KCSE) or its equivalent as equated by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC). This course is only offered in Teacher Training Colleges.
The new Diploma in Primary Education (DPTE) Course duration
The duration of the diploma training shall be three years, according to the approved curriculum designs. Trainees are required to cover the recommended hours for coursework, and required hours for practicum and pass the assessments as directed by Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC).
The Teacher Trainee also undertakes a three months micro-teaching course which is a prerequisite for teaching practice. Candidates are required to produce evidence of adherence to positive moral values and good behavior such as Police Clearance.
Specialization areas in the new Diploma in Primary Education (DPTE) Course duration. The teachers’ trainees will only specialize in three subject areas, having attained a minimum KCSE grade of C (Plain) in the learning areas they wish to focus on.
The areas for specialization have been grouped into four clusters, but teachers will only pick one subject per category for specialty. Candidates shall specialize from the first year in at least three learning areas preferably from any one of the four clusters.
General requirements for registration of teachers in Kenya
- Kenyan Citizens
- Certificate of Good Conduct
- Relevant academic and professional certificates from recognized institutions
- A copy of the Identity Card or Passport photo
- KRA Pin Certificate
- Duly filled GP 69 Medical Form and Payment of registration fee; Non-refundable fee of Kshs. 1055/- Deposit is made to the TSC
