Cristiano Ronaldo has signed a two-year deal with a Saudi Arabia-based club Al Nassr after his contract at Manchester United was terminated after a series of disciplinary issues at the club.
Ronaldo said he gave his word to Al Nassr despite having many other offers around the world.
“I had many opportunities in Europe, Brazil, Australia, the US, and even Portugal many clubs tried to sign me, but I gave my word to this club,’’ he said on Tuesday while being unveiled by the Saudi Arabian club.
The deal will see Ronaldo play for Al Nassr until 2025 while earning a whopping £177 million (26.4 billion shillings) per year.
With this amount, Ronaldo hits history as the highest-paid footballer in the world.
To break the amount down, the ex-Real Madrid and Machester United forward will pocket 2.2 billion shillings per month, 508 million shillings per week 73 million shillings per day, 3 million shillings per hour, 51,000 shillings per minute, and 860 shillings per second.
The 37-year-old will for the first time be playing outside Europe and will be defending his title at Al-Nassr, which is seeking to win the Saudi Pro League for the first time since 2019. He could make his debut on Thursday against Saudi Pro-League side Al Ta’ee or Saturday against Al Shabab.
Ronaldo left Manchester United last month following disciplinary issues at the club. Various media reported that in a television interview, the Portugal international said that he felt betrayed by Manchester United, adding that he did not respect his Dutch manager Erik ten Hang.
In a statement posted on United’s website, the club stated that Ronaldo would leave Manchester United by mutual agreement while thanking him for his immense contribution to the club.
‘’The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future. Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch,’’ reads the statement in part.
