Kenya is home to one of the most established innovation ecosystems in Africa. Some of the homegrown successes in the tech sector are transforming Kenya into a digital-first nation. And the incorporation of mobile phone services and technology in service delivery has improved efficiency and reduced time spent carrying out basic transactions; case in point, NSSF services.
Today, a number of services have been automated and made available to citizens at the comfort of their mobile phones in the form of Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) codes.
A USSD code allows users to access various services, such as menu-type applications using shortcodes that usually start with * and end with # and can be typed into any mobile phone or Smartphone to call up a specific action.
An excellent example of such a service is the USSD Code *303#. This code is specific to Kenya’s National Social Security Fund (NSSF). It allows you to carry out many functions relating to saving for retirement.
By dialing USSD code *303# on your Smartphone or feature mobile phone, you can access the following NSSF services;
- Register to become an NSSF member using *303*1#
- Check NSSF statement. One can also check their NSSF number using *303*55#
- Make contributions and top up your NSSF account using *303*1# and selecting Option 3 – payments
- Make Tenant Purchase Scheme (TPS) payments
- You can track your benefit claim as a member
Instead of physically visiting Huduma Centers and or the NSSF offices to register as a member, you can register yourself using your phone with the USSD code *303*1#. Once you dial the code, you can choose the type of member you want to be and follow the prompts.

As a registered user, you can now begin making contributions, top up your account, and use the same code to check your NSSF number or obtain your member statement.
If you are on the NSSF Tenant Purchase Scheme (TPS), you can conveniently make rent and service charge payments through the *303*3# code. Here is a simple guide on how to do that:
- Dial *303*3# on your phone
- Enter your account number/TPS Number (7 digit number)
- Enter the amount
- Give consent for the deduction
- Enter your M-PESA PIN
- You will receive a confirmation message on the success of the transaction
What If You Have Forgotten Your PIN?
Apart from the above services, you can also use the USSD *303# to reset it. The process is simple. On the USSD *303#, if you no longer remember your PIN, you can dial 0 when requested for the PIN, enter the security question then reset/change the PIN.
The *303# code for NSSF brings convenience and speed, a vital concern for many members, especially when making payments.
