Electric Buses Prove That Green Transport Can Also Be Good Business

By Robai Ludenyi,

Electric buses are steadily changing the face of public transport, and many operators are now discovering that going green also makes good business sense. Across Kenya, transport companies and startups that have invested in electric buses say the shift is helping them cut operating costs and improve profits, even as the country continues to face high fuel prices.

Unlike diesel buses, electric buses cost far less to run daily. Operators explain that electricity is cheaper and more stable in price compared to fuel, which often rises without warning. This has helped businesses plan their expenses better and protect their earnings. Maintenance costs are also lower because electric buses have fewer moving parts, meaning less wear and tear and fewer breakdowns.

For many transport operators, the biggest surprise has been how quickly the buses begin to pay for themselves. Some companies report that the savings made from fuel and maintenance allow them to recover their investment faster than expected. Over time, this leads to higher profit margins, especially for businesses that operate buses on busy urban routes where vehicles are on the road for long hours each day.

Passengers are also feeling the difference. Electric buses are quieter, smoother, and produce no exhaust fumes, making rides more comfortable and cleaner. This has helped operators attract environmentally conscious customers and improve their public image, especially in cities struggling with air pollution and traffic congestion.

However, the transition has not been without challenges. Charging infrastructure is still limited in some areas, forcing operators to carefully plan routes and schedules. Power reliability and the initial cost of buying electric buses remain concerns, particularly for small transport businesses with limited access to financing.
