Kenyan mobile phone users are set to benefit after the Communications Authority announced a reduction in cross-network call charges that will run for the next four years. The move is expected to lower the cost of making calls between different mobile service providers, offering relief to millions of subscribers across the country.

The new directive targets interconnection rates  the fees telecom companies charge each other when a customer makes a call to a different network. These charges have traditionally influenced the final cost consumers pay when calling someone on another network. By lowering these rates, the regulator aims to encourage fair competition and reduce the financial burden on customers.

This decision could reshape the telecommunications market. Lower interconnection fees may push mobile service providers to adjust their pricing structures. Customers who frequently make cross-network calls stand to save more money, especially small business owners and individuals who rely heavily on mobile communication for daily operations.

The regulator stated that the reduction will be implemented gradually over four years to allow telecom companies time to adjust their financial models. This phased approach is designed to protect service quality while still ensuring consumers enjoy meaningful savings.

For years, consumer groups have argued that high cross-network charges discouraged people from calling across different providers. Some users even maintained multiple SIM cards to avoid higher fees. The new policy seeks to address this imbalance and promote a more open and competitive telecom environment.

Telecommunications firms are expected to review their pricing packages in response to the changes. While the regulator insists the move will not harm the industry, companies may need to innovate and improve efficiency to maintain profit margins under the new structure.

Lower call costs can support entrepreneurship, improve access to information, and strengthen social connections. In a country where mobile phones are central to business, banking, and personal communication, even small price reductions can have a wide impact.

The Communications Authority maintains that the policy aligns with its broader goal of protecting consumers while ensuring a stable and competitive telecom sector.
