The Government of Japan, through the Embassy of Japan in Kenya, has officially announced the opening of applications for the prestigious Monbukagakusho Scholarship, widely known as the MEXT Scholarship
The scholarship is targeting Kenyan students who have recently completed their secondary education. The announcement, made on April 21 via the embassy’s official communication channels, signals a renewed opportunity for academically strong candidates from Kenya to pursue fully funded studies in Japan.
In its statement, the embassy expressed enthusiasm about welcoming a new cohort of scholars, emphasizing its commitment to strengthening educational and cultural ties between the two nations.
“We are happy to announce that the 2027 MEXT Scholarship for Kenyan nationals is now open,” the embassy shared, inviting qualified applicants to take advantage of the opportunity.
Eligibility Criteria and Academic Requirements
To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must first meet the fundamental requirement of Kenyan citizenship.
This eligibility extends to individuals who are citizens by birth, as well as those who have acquired citizenship through registration, marriage, adoption, lawful residence, or naturalization.
Academic excellence is a central requirement across all categories of the scholarship. Candidates applying for the undergraduate track must demonstrate exceptional performance in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
Specifically, applicants are required to have attained a mean grade of A (plain), with at least four subjects graded at A, including core subjects such as Mathematics, English, and Kiswahili. These stringent requirements reflect the highly competitive nature of the program.
For those interested in enrolling in Japan’s Colleges of Technology, commonly referred to as KOSEN institutions, slightly different criteria apply. These institutions offer specialized five-year programs designed for students beginning at a relatively young age, focusing heavily on engineering and technical disciplines.
Applicants must have achieved a minimum mean grade of A- (minus), with strong individual subject scores: at least A- in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, and a minimum of B+ in English.
Another pathway available under the MEXT Scholarship is through Specialized Training Colleges, known in Japan as Senshu Gakko. These institutions provide practical, career-oriented education over a period of two to four years in fields such as information technology, engineering, business, fashion, and healthcare.
Compared to other categories, this track has slightly more accessible academic requirements. Applicants must have a mean grade of B (plain), with at least a B+ in Mathematics and a minimum of B in English.
For candidates aiming at postgraduate studies, the Research Students category offers an avenue to pursue either a master’s degree or a PhD. Applicants seeking admission into a master’s program must hold at least a second-class upper division bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in Kenya.
Those applying for doctoral studies are required to have completed a master’s degree, including a thesis component, demonstrating their readiness for advanced research.
Comprehensive Scholarship Benefits
The MEXT Scholarship is widely regarded as one of the most generous international scholarship programs available. Successful applicants will receive full financial support from the Japanese government. This includes complete coverage of tuition fees, round-trip airfare between Kenya and Japan, and a monthly stipend to cater for living expenses during the period of study.
The scholarship spans multiple academic levels, undergraduate, technical education, vocational training, and postgraduate research, making it accessible to a broad range of applicants. This diversity ensures that students at different stages of their academic journey can find a suitable entry point into Japan’s education system.
Application Process and Submission Guidelines
Prospective applicants are required to begin their application process by downloading the official forms from the Study in Japan website. Each scholarship category has its own dedicated section on the platform, complete with detailed guidelines outlining the required documentation and submission procedures.
For undergraduate applicants, the portal provides not only the application forms but also past examination papers. These materials are strongly recommended as preparation tools, giving candidates insight into the type and level of assessments they may face during the selection process.
Similarly, applicants for Colleges of Technology and Specialized Training Colleges will find separate application pages tailored to their respective tracks. These pages include comprehensive instructions and all necessary resources to ensure a complete and competitive application.
Candidates applying under the Research Students category also have access to specialized resources, including previous examination papers and detailed instructions designed to guide them through the process.
These materials are particularly useful in helping applicants refine their proposals and prepare for interviews or written assessments.
Once all required documents have been completed and compiled according to the official guidelines, applicants must submit their applications either by hand delivery or by post. Submissions should be addressed to the Scholarships Desk at the Embassy of Japan, located along Mara Road in Upper Hill, Nairobi
All applications must be received by the embassy no later than May 19, 2026, at 4:30 p.m. The embassy has strongly advised applicants to submit their documents well in advance of the deadline to avoid any last-minute complications or delays.
Reinforcing this timeline, the embassy emphasized: “All applications must be submitted to the Embassy of Japan in Kenya no later than 4:30 pm on Tuesday, 19th May 2026.”
