The decision by Alliance High School to send students home for the weekend following an incident involving a section of mattresses is a precautionary measure that prioritises safety. Fortunately, no student was injured, and the school administration has assured parents that learning activities remain uninterrupted. However, the incident raises a broader concern that can no longer be ignored.
In recent months, Kenya has witnessed a worrying increase in school fires and student unrest. From the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Academy that claimed the lives of 16 students to incidents reported at Nakuru Girls, Njoro Girls and Lenana School, the pattern has become too frequent to be dismissed as normal occurrences.
While investigations focus on the immediate causes of fires, greater attention must be paid to the underlying issues within schools. School fires often expose underlying challenges that require serious attention from educators, policymakers, parents and students.
School managements also have a responsibility to ensure that safety measures are not merely procedural requirements but practical systems that can protect lives. Functional fire-fighting equipment, regular safety drills, well-maintained dormitories and clear emergency response plans should be standard in every institution. The cost of prevention is far lower than the price paid when lives and property are lost.
Parents, too, must remain active partners in the education process. Open communication between families and schools can help identify concerns before they escalate into destructive behaviour. At the same time, education authorities should strengthen inspections and provide adequate resources to improve safety standards across the country.
The Alliance High School incident ended without injuries, a fortunate outcome that should not be taken for granted. It should instead serve as another reminder that Kenya’s schools need lasting solutions rather than reactive measures whenever a fire breaks out.The safety of learners must remain the highest priority. Every school fire prevented is a tragedy avoided, a future protected and a lesson learned before lives are placed at risk.
