Germany launched their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign emphatically, defeating tournament debutants Curacao 7-1 in a Group E encounter that showcased both the gulf in experience and the magic of football’s biggest stage.
As expected, the four-time world champions dominated proceedings from the opening whistle, with their superior quality and depth proving too much for the Caribbean side. Goals from Nico Schlotterbeck, Kai Havertz, who scored twice, Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav ensured Germany began the tournament with a commanding victory.
Yet despite the heavy defeat, Curacao left the stadium with a moment that will forever occupy a special place in the nation’s sporting history. The Caribbean island, with a population of just under 160,000 people, scored its first-ever FIFA World Cup goal through Jeremy Antonisse Comenencia. The strike may have done little to alter the result, but it represented a landmark achievement for a country appearing at its first World Cup.
The goal also denied veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer a clean sheet. At 40 years old, Neuer became the oldest German player ever to feature at a World Cup and is currently taking part in his fifth global tournament. Having been largely untroubled throughout the match, he was finally beaten by a shot that took a deflection on its way into the net.
For Germany, the result sends an early message to their rivals that they intend to challenge for the trophy. Their attacking fluidity and efficiency in front of goal highlighted the strength of a squad packed with talent and experience.
For Curacao, however, the scoreline tells only part of the story. While the defeat was difficult, their historic first World Cup goal served as a reminder that simply reaching the tournament was already a remarkable achievement. In that moment, the small island nation had its place in World Cup history secured.
