A Grade Six pupil is receiving treatment at Awendo Sub-County Hospital after suffering an electric shock from a live power cable in Athiko, Awendo Town, Migori County, in an incident that has renewed concerns over public safety and illegal electricity connections.
The girl was walking home from church with her mother, Sharon Odhiambo, when the incident happened. According to her mother, they stopped near a roadside kiosk before reaching home. She briefly left her daughter waiting outside as she crossed to a nearby market to buy a few food items.
Moments later, the child came into contact with a live electric cable running from the kiosk. She was electrocuted and sustained injuries before residents rushed to help her. She was later taken to Awendo Sub-County Hospital, where she is recovering while receiving medical treatment.
The incident has left the family shaken, with the girl’s mother calling for a thorough investigation into how the dangerous power cable was left exposed in a public area. She has already reported the matter to Awendo Police Station and wants those found responsible to be held accountable to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
The accident has also raised fresh concerns among residents, who say electrocution cases have become increasingly common. Area village elder Alexander Ochieng noted that this is not the first incident of its kind, saying several similar cases have been reported in recent months. He warned that unless urgent action is taken, more people could be seriously injured or even lose their lives.
The latest incident has sparked anger among residents, many of whom are demanding that authorities investigate the owner of the kiosk and take legal action if negligence is established. They say businesses operating with unsafe electricity connections are putting the lives of innocent people at risk.
They are now urging Kenya Power and other relevant authorities to conduct inspections across Awendo Town, disconnect illegal power connections, and ensure all electricity installations meet safety standards. They say stronger enforcement is necessary to protect residents from avoidable accidents and prevent further injuries or possible loss of life.
