The Best AI Feature I’ve Seen in Kenyan Retail Doesn’t Feel Like AI at All

Mobile Internet

Carrefour Kenya just added one of the most useful AI features I’ve seen in local retail, and it won’t make headlines, win awards, or trend on Twitter. It’ll just quietly save people time.

Here’s what it does. You can now:

And the app automatically finds the products and suggests items to add directly to your cart, just like that.

The Problem Nobody Talks About

Personally, I don’t enjoy searching for “tomatoes, milk, tissue, cooking oil, bread, detergent, yoghurt, toothpaste, onions…” one item at a time.

Shopping online often feels like playing a scavenger hunt designed by someone who has never actually entered a supermarket. Click, search, scroll, select, repeat, for every single item on your list.

This AI feature removes that friction entirely. And that’s exactly where AI shines: not necessarily in replacing people, but in eliminating unnecessary work.

The Real Winners Won’t Be the Flashy Ones

The most successful AI implementations won’t always be the robots, the viral demos, or the futuristic showcases. They’ll be the features that quietly save you:

What’s interesting is that we’re increasingly seeing Kenyan businesses move from talking about AI to actually embedding it into customer experiences. That’s the real shift, from buzzword to utility.

The Question That Actually Matters

The winners in the AI era may not be the companies building the biggest AI models. They may be the companies asking a much smaller, much more practical question:

“What annoying task can we remove for our customers?”

Because convenience scales. And consumers get addicted — fast — to things that make life easier.

I suspect that after using this feature once, manually searching for every item on your shopping list is going to feel a little bit like typing phone numbers from memory. Nobody’s going back.

Technology at Its Best Is Invisible

You don’t notice the AI. You just notice that shopping got quicker.

That’s the whole point.

Have you tried it yet? I pasted in a list someone sent me and — BAM — it was in my cart before I could finish being skeptical about it.
