Did You Know That A Smart Home Starts In The Laundry Room?

LG

Nairobi’s smart home conversation has, for years, centred on television screens and voice assistants. LG East Africa is making the case that the room where real intelligence belongs is the one most homeowners never think to upgrade: the laundry room.

The LG WashTower, launched locally through distributor Opalnet, packs a 13kg washer and 10kg dryer into a single stacked unit, cutting the footprint of two appliances down to one column that fits into the compact utility spaces common in Nairobi’s newer apartments and townhouses. The machine sits at the premium end of the market, but the case LG is making is less about price and more about what the appliance actually does once it is switched on.

Smart Functionality and Intelligent Design

At the centre of that case is AI DD, LG’s built-in intelligence system that reads the weight and fabric type of a load before selecting a wash cycle, rather than leaving that judgment to the user. It is a small shift, but it changes the basic relationship between person and machine. Instead of a homeowner guessing at settings, the washer adjusts itself.

Layered on top is TurboWash 360, which can cut wash time by up to 39 minutes on selected cycles without compromising on cleaning performance. This matters to households running laundry between school runs, work and weekend chores.

The dryer half of the unit runs on a Dual Inverter Heat Pump, a design that recycles heated air rather than venting it outside, an energy-saving feature well suited to Kenya’s rising electricity costs. Built-in moisture sensors track how dry the load actually is and cut the cycle short once it gets there, removing the habit of over-drying clothes out of caution.

Then there is Center Control, LG’s answer to a design flaw that has quietly annoyed users of stacked washer dryers for years. Most stacked laundry machines have the second unit’s controls sitting too high to reach without a step stool. The WashTower places both washer and dryer controls on a single panel at a height built for actual use, not just for the display floor.

Smart Connectivity through ThinQ

Connectivity is where LG ties the appliance back to the smart home pitch directly. Through the ThinQ app, users can start or stop a cycle, monitor energy use, and get a notification when laundry is done, all from a phone. For a market where remote work and long commutes have become normal, that kind of control, being able to start a wash from a desk in Westlands and know it is ready by the time you get home, is arguably more useful day to day than a smart TV most people already know how to operate.

Great Engineering, Better Performance

Underneath the smart features sits a more basic engineering case for the WashTower. Its TrueBalance anti-vibration system keeps the unit stable and quiet even on large loads.

The Direct Drive Motor that powers the washer runs with fewer moving parts than a belt-driven system, which typically means less mechanical wear over the appliance’s lifespan and a lower long-term cost of ownership, a consideration for buyers weighing the WashTower’s premium price against years of use.

The Solution for Your Building

Kenya’s growing urban population and shrinking apartment footprints have made space-saving appliances one of the fastest-growing categories in the local home appliance market. Households moving into newer developments are increasingly trading floor space for design and convenience, and a stacked unit that does the work of two appliances without the footprint of two appliances fits neatly into that shift.

Smart home marketing has trained Kenyan consumers to associate intelligence with entertainment and security. The WashTower asks a different question: why should the most physically demanding, time-consuming chore in the house be the last one to get smart? For LG, the laundry room is not an afterthought in the smart home story. It is where the argument is easiest to prove: one less trip up and down the stairs, one less guessed setting, one fewer hour spent waiting for a load that is already done.
