House hunting in Kenya is about to get a lot less exhausting. Real estate tech startup Reemio has launched a virtual property marketplace that puts rentals and homes for sale in one place, and connects tenants directly with verified landlords.
The numbers so far: more than 28,000 rental listings, over 70 properties for sale across Nairobi and its environs, and 150-plus successful tenant placements made through verified listings, virtual tours and online bookings.
The platform is taking aim at the pain points that have long defined the search: fake listings, rising costs and murky pricing. Viewing fees alone can run prospective tenants between Sh1,000 and Sh3,000 per visit.
“For many years, Kenyans have faced frustrations associated with conventional house hunting, including fraudulent listings, costly property searches and limited market transparency,” said Njoki Kimani, Head of Business at Reemio. “These challenges have made the process of finding a suitable home unnecessarily difficult, time-consuming and costly.”
She added: “Our goal is to make house hunting more transparent, convenient and accessible, while giving landlords a more efficient way to reach potential tenants.”
Out with the old way
Gone are the days of relying on brokers, scanning newspaper ads and trekking to property after property. Driven by younger, tech-savvy renters who want speed and convenience, users can now browse verified listings, take virtual tours, compare amenities and check extra costs like water, electricity and service charges before booking a physical viewing.
What’s in it for landlords
Digital platforms offer owners a faster route to market, a wider pool of prospects and the potential for shorter vacancies. Listings can also reach Kenyans in the diaspora who are searching for a home ahead of a return, or eyeing an investment back home.
Data with a payoff
The platforms also reveal what renters and buyers are actually looking for, from home types and locations to amenities and price points. That insight can help owners and developers shape property development and marketing decisions nationwide.
