President Buhari of Nigeria to Make Maiden Visit to Kenya

President Muhammadu Buhari is set to visit Kenya on Thursday this week in a maiden visit which is expected to boost economic ties between Kenya and Nigeria, a relationship which has been in the cold for more than eight months.

President Buhari comes at a time when the deal in investments as well as military deals between Kenya and Nigeria have been left in the dark in the last eight months ever since President Goodluck Jonathan exited power.

President Muhammadu Buhari is a leader of the most populous state in Africa and his visit is seen as a step to the revival of the economic deals between Kenya and Nigeria that were left unfinished by his predecessor Goodluck Jonathan.

The visiting head of state is expected to hold talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta, where matters concerning security as well as the economies of the two states are expected to widely be discussed and then attend a memorial service for the Kenyan soldiers who were recently killed in Somalia.

Nigeria just like Kenya, has been in a constant fight with a terrorist group, Boko Haram, an equivalent of Alshabaab in Somalia. Boko Haram is a terrorist group that has claimed many lives in Nigeria.

Economically, Nigeria is far much better than Kenya given the fact that Nigeria is a major oil producer in Africa and Kenya, in terms of oil producing is still an infant with the first ever discovery having been done in Turkana County.

Before President Goodluck Jonathan relinquished power, he and President Kenyatta had agreed on a cooperation between the Foreign Service Institute of Kenya and the Foreign Service Academy of Nigeria as well as the establishment of a joint Commission for Cooperation that would enhance bilateral cooperation in areas that the two states share interests such as trade, education, tourism, energy as well as agriculture.
