Maize

Maize is one of Kenya’s staple foods and for that reason, the commodity’s prices tend to fluctuate in different seasons. A 90kg bag of maize is currently retailing at Sh.2600 in Eldoret. This means that 2-kilograms of the commodity is retailing between Sh.40 and Sh.50. Just recently, the region was in the harvesting season, that is in December when the same 90kg bag went at Sh.1500.

This shows a rise in the price at this time of the year where farmers have just finished the planting process maize. Most of the farmers are almost clearing whatever they had stored for consumption purposes, especially those practicing small scale farming of the commodity.

In Kakamega, a 90kg of the commodity was being sold at Sh.2800, meaning that a 2kg of maize is being sold between Sh.50 and Sh.60.

Beans

A 90kg bag of beans is retailing at Sh.6800 in Eldoret while the same is going at Sh.8000 in Kakamega. The commodity is currently slightly high priced due to reduced supply in the market attributable to the cold weather spell currently being experienced in many parts of Kenya. Another reason for the high price is the planting season which has just been concluded thus prices went up to cater to farmers who had to purchase the seeds for the purposes of planting.

The counties of Uasin Gishu and Kakamega boarder each other thus the same range of prices on the commodities as buyers and sellers tend to be within these same regions.

The Prices for beans are expected to remain so in the next two months up to the month of July, which is the harvesting season for beans, thus it will be in plenty. Maize on the other hand is expected to continue rising as its harvesting season is between October and December.
