Papa Wemba, Lucy Kibaki among Most Trending Google Searches in April

Google Search Trends that indicate search patterns over a period of time indicate that the late Jules Shungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba – popularly known as Papa Wemba – was the most trending search in the month of April. The musician, hailed by many as the king of Congolese Rhumba, died after collapsing on stage in Ivory Coast on 24 April at the age of 66.

Former First Lady, Lucy Kibaki was the second most trending search after she passed on while undergoing treatment in London, United Kingdom. She will be buried in her home in Othaya, Nyeri, on Saturday, 7 May. Prince Rogers Nelson, an American musician known to many as Prince was the third most trending search following his death at his Paisley Park home and studio in Minneapolis. He died at the age of 57.

The fourth most trending search was Chase Bank after rumors of its collapse went viral on social media. Chase Bank, which was placed under receivership on April 7, was the third small-sized lender to go into statutory management nine months after Dubai Bank Kenya Ltd. and Imperial Bank Ltd.

Safaricom CEO, Bob Collymore, and his spouse Wambui Kamiru took the fifth position as Kenyans went online to gather more information about their wedding that took place on April 3.

Other trending searches were: Beyonce Lemonade – as people went online to find out more about Beyonce’s sixth studio album; Panama Papers – as people turned to search to find out more about the largest data leak in history. The leak is a set of 11.5 million leaked documents that detail financial information for more than 214,000 offshore companies associated with the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca; Rachel Roy – as people went online to find out more about the American fashion designer after Beyonce allegedly mentioned her as “Becky with the good hair” in her new Lemonade album; Influenza – after the viral disease, commonly known as “flu” killed  39 infants in Nakuru County and Mall of Africa, a shopping mall located in Midrand, South Africa after RMB Holdings announced it will acquire a stake in Mall of Africa developer, Atterbury.

Under “What is’ trending category, What is the time in San Francisco, Tennessee, California was the most trending search followed by What is receivership as Kenyans people wanted to understand what the term means after Chase Bank was put under receivership. In law, receivership is the situation in which an institution or enterprise is placed in the custodial responsibility of others. What is Coachella was the third most trending question as people searched more about the annual music and arts festival held in the Inland Empire’s Coachella Valley in the Colorado Desert. Other questions that drew attention of Kenyans online where: What is the exchange rate of the dollar in Kenya; What is influenza; What is Panama Papers; What is African philosophy; What is peasant farming, What is disability and What is cold war.

In the ‘How to’ category, the most trending search was, How to be a better man – as people went online to find out how men can become better versions of themselves, while How to make minion quotes came in second, as people went online to find out how to conceptualise the popular images. Kenyans also searched How to apply for USA scholarship, How to prepare minced meat, How to create email address; How to develop an App; How to soften free range chicken; and How to make money with Google AdSense. Google AdSense is a free, simple way for website publishers of all sizes to earn money by displaying targeted Google ads on their websites.Other search terms that trended were How to make marble cake and How to pay electricity bill online.
