Counties to benefit from Huawei ICT Solutions to boost security

Huawei Kenya’s contribution to making Nairobi a smart city through the use Information and Communications Technology (ICT) cannot be underscored.

Eunice Kariuki, Director of the ICT Authority, made the remarks during the launch of Huawei’s three-day 2016 Smart Cities Exhibition which begun on Monday.

“Industry players in Kenya appreciate Huawei’s commitment in the ICT space during which time the company has been involved in both transformative projects and social responsibility engagements,” she said.

Further, she acknowledged the role the company has played in offering internship opportunities to Kenyan students to make them relevant in the ICT market.

“Kenya ICT students can get two month internships at Huawei. Currently 52 have benefitted from the program.”

“Huawei donated various devices like tablets to government officials to enable them to work while on the move. Every year the company also sends 10 outstanding ICT students to China for two weeks to gain international exposure,” she added.

Last year, Huawei, in cooperation with Kenya National police and Safaricom facilitated the delivery of a Safe City project which authorities said has led to a decline in crime rates by 46 percent in towns where Huawei has installed CCTV surveillance cameras.

Huawei Kenya Vice-General Manager, Freddie Zhang, Huawei’s smart city solutions will help Kenya build safer and better residential, business and tourism environments in cities to attract investment and increase employment.

The company now intends to replicate the same to the remaining counties in Kenya to provide end-to-end public safety solutions.

These solutions include capabilities such as convergent command and visualized dispatching to improve emergency response time. Cloud platforms and intelligent analytics combine to improve both the effectiveness and efficiency of law enforcement and ensure a safe environment for the public.

Huawei entered Africa in 1998. It is the world’s largest telecommunications company by revenue, and it ranks No.3 in terms of global smartphone market share, after Samsung and Apple.
