Rebecca Chesire, Cosmas Birech win 7th edition of Safaricom Iten Road Race

Cosmas Birech and Rebecca Chesire are the winners of the 7^th edition of Safaricom Iten 10km road race held today in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

Birech beat last year’s winner Albert Kangogo to take the lead in the men’s race in a time of 28:19, an improvement of last year’s winner’s time of 00:30

Albert Kangogo came in second 28:22, with Hosea Mwok finishing 3^rd in 28:26.

Rebecca Chesir took the lead in the 10km female race to finish in 33:14 followed by Valerie Jemoli in a time of 33:27. Rachael Kosgei finish third in 33:36.

The 10km road race was flagged off at 8am at the boundary of Elgeyo Marakwet and Uasin Gishu County with hundreds of athletes coming out to participate despite the chilly morning weather.

Top three winners of both male and female categories were awarded with Kshs. 40, 000, 30, 000, 15,000 respectively.

Next week, Safaricom Athletics Series will move to Kisii for the Kisii Half Marathon, after which the Series will move to Mombasa for the Mombasa International Marathon.
