Five Kenyan Companies Shortlisted for 2016 African FinTech Awards

Five Kenyan companies have been shortlisted as one of the African FinTech Top 3 within their respective category, out of a list of the 100 most promising African FinTech companies. A total of 28 Kenyan companies were nominated including MPESA, 3G Direct, PesaPal and crowd sourcing platform, M-Changa. And being one of the Top 3 FinTech companies has landed the organizations an invitation to pitch at the FinTech Awards on 13 October 2016 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The presentation includes a 7-minute demonstration followed by a Q&A will be decisive in establishing the winner of the category plus one overall winner.

The Kenyan companies as per catergory are:

  • Payment – Cellulant;
  • Retail Banking – Eclectics International;
  • Blockchain/Bitcoin – BitPesa
  • Lending & Financing – Branch
  • Lending & Financing – FarmDrive

Speaking in Nairobi, Cellulant’s Ken Njoroge said “We are excited about this nomination and being among peers pursuing excellence in innovating the FinTech industry across Africa.

“FinTech is completely revolutionising the speed, the scale and the cost of getting services to the people. This is transformational for Africa – and it is this transformation that drives Cellulant to continue realising this for millions of consumers and thousands of businesses,” he concluded.

Headquartered in Nairobi and founded in 2004 by Ken Njoroge and Nigerian Bolaji Akinboro, Cellulant is already well-established in Africa, with offices in Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Malawi, Uganda, Zambia, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Mozambique.

“More than 30,000 FinTech enthusiasats from all over the world voted for their favourite company from the list of most promising African FinTechs.  This was in addition to a panel of judges consisting of FinTech experts, experienced FinTech investors, innovation leads of Africa’s top banks and FinTech visionaries.

The African FinTech Awards is the place where innovative and disruptive FinTech companies are awarded. Over 500 entrepreneurs, bankers, investors and advisors, will attend giving opportunities to extend networks, exchange knowledge and develop business. The African FinTech Awards forms an integrated part of Finance Indaba Africa and is the largest conference and expo for finance professionals on the continent.
