How the Bourse Performed on Tuesday: A Look at the Stocks

Equities market extended its bearish momentum on Tuesday’s trading session at the Nairobi Security Exchange, as gauged by the market barometers.
Both the NSE-20 Share Index and NSE-25 Share Index shed off 0.19 percent to close at 3242.46 and 3680.71 points respectively. The Nairobi All Share Index (NASI) erased 0.49 percent points to end at 139.80 points.
Investor participation, as measured by equity turnover, expanded 59.82 percent to 716.32 million shillings. Market capitalization declined slightly from 2.04 trillion shillings to settle at 2.03 trillion shillings. The declining stocks outpaced the advancing stocks resulting in A/D ratio of 0.71x.
Kenya Commercial Bank Results at a Glance
Kenya Commercial Bank Group (NSE: KCB) announced a 15 percent jump on its profit after tax to 15.95 billion shillings in Q3 2016. The bottom line was buoyed by 27 percent expansion on its interest income segment to 36.13 billion shillings.
Total Assets slowed down 6 percent from 607.25 billion shillings; negatively impacted by the currency devaluations on its South Sudan subsidiary. The group’s loan book grew by 5 percent to 364.53 billion shillings, uplifted by the 8 percent increase from its Kenyan unit. The share performance of KCB Group was elevated 0.87 percent in the run-up to the release of its Q316 earnings.
Actively Traded Stocks, Gainers and Losers at the NSE on Tuesday
Safaricom Ltd (NSE: SCOM) was the most actively traded stock on Tuesday accounting for 46.40 percent of the total market value traded activity.
East Africa Breweries Ltd (NSE: EABL) was the second most actively traded counter, accounting for 26.74 percent of the total market turnover.
Olympia Capital Holdings Ltd (NSE: OCH) topped the gainers chart with a 6.67 percent advance to close the day at 3.20 shillings.
Uchumi Supermarket Ltd (NSE: UCHM) mirrored closely gaining 6.15 percent to close at 3.45 shillings while Kapchorua Tea Co. Ltd (NSE: KAPR) emerged the day’s top laggard retreating 9.41 percent to close the day at 77.00 shillings whereas Trans-Century Ltd (NSE: TCL), came second declining by 7.33 percent to end the day at 6.95 shillings.
Foreign Investor’s Participation at the NSE
The foreign investors accounted for 86.00 percent of total turnover against 14.00 percent of local participation on Tuesday at the NSE.
Accumulative activities took center-stage, resulting in net inflows worth 1.25 million shillings relative to net inflows worth 16.31 million shillings on Monday.
Safaricom Limited (NSE: SCOM) which recorded a turnover of 317.23 million shillings representing 25.80 percent of total activity and 51.50 percent of foreign investor activity, was the Tuesday’s highest traded stock, followed by East Africa Breweries Limited (NSE: EABL), recording a turnover of 190.83 million shillings to account for 15.53 percent of total market activity and 31.00 percent of foreign investor activity.
Kenya Power and Lighting Company Limited (NSE: KPLC) posted the day’s highest net inflows worth 6.95 million shillings and the day’s highest net outflows, worth 3.09 million shillings were posted by Safaricom Limited (NSE: SCOM).
