Green maize is retailing highest in Mombasa and lowest in Nakuru and Eldoret. This is because in Mombasa, a 115-kilogram bag of green maize is being sold at 4,900 shillings while in Kisumu and Eldoret the same quantity is going at 1,600 shillings.
The market prices for a 90-kilogram bag of dry maize have not changed as they are as follows: 2,800 shillings in Nairobi, 3,000 shillings in Mombasa, 3,600 shillings in Kisumu, 2,400 shillings in Nakuru, 2,500 shillings in Eldoret and Kitale respectively.
Here is a summary of the same and others like Finger millet and Sorghum:
In Eldoret, a 90 kilogram bag of green grams has a market price of 13,500 as compared to Nakuru, where the same is being retailed at 8,000 shillings bringing about a market price difference of 5,500 shillings between the two towns. The same commodity is being sold as 11,700 shillings in Kitale and it is clear that Eldoret and Kitale have a low supply of green grams thus the high market prices.
