David Sanborn set to Grace the Upcoming Safaricom Jazz Festival

David Sanborn, the American Alto-Saxophonist has been invited as the headline artist at this year’s fourth edition of the Safaricom International Jazz Festival.

The event is set to take place on February 26th 2016 at Kasarani Sports grounds. Announcing the news, Safaricom’s CEO Bob Collymore stated that they are proud of announcing Sanborn as another award-winning performer who will be gracing the occasion, adding that it comes as a fulfilment of their promise to an international standard event when they were launching the festival back in 2014.

“David Sanborn is a prolific musician and performer with wide appeal, and he will be joined on stage by an equally talented line-up of musicians drawn from the UK, Europe, Middle East and Africa at the event, whose theme is: ‘Music That Moves’,” he added.

Sanborn has released 24 albums; eight of them Gold and one Platinum, in a career spanning over four decades. Known for his masterful blend of traditional jazz, instrumental pop and soulful R&B, he has played with legendary musicians such as the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Luther Vandross, David Bowie, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder.

Collymore assured music lovers who will be attending the event to expect to enjoy a selection of pure jazz as well as a mix of jazz fusions with influences from around the world.

Proceeds from the festival are always used to support ghetto classics which is a non-profit programme meant to teach music skills to the young people who come from underprivileged backgrounds. The programme, supports about 650 children from several low-income neighborhoods in Nairobi. It acts as a source of refuge from the harsh, poverty-stricken environments synonymous with urban slums.

By 2016, proceeds from the Jazz Festival were at 19 million shillings, and have over the years enabled a number of older Ghetto Classics members join university, while the younger ones and their families benefit from school fees, rent and other financial and non-financial assistance.
