Airtel Introduces a Cheaper Voice Package to Tap New Subscribers

Airtel Kenya introduced a voice package that will cut on call charges from its subscribers to rivals to compete with rival competitor like Safaricom by a third to two Kenya shillings per minute in an effort to tap new subscribers.

With this new voice package all Airtel subscribers will be required to subscribe daily, weekly and monthly depending on their will. Daily subscription will go for 10 shillings, weekly for 50 shillings and monthly for 150 shillings.

For calling within the Airtel network the subscribers will be guaranteed 100 minutes daily talk time or 3,000 minutes monthly talk time.

Airtel CEO Prasanta Das Sarma said that Airtel endeavors to keep giving its customers the very best products and services that will positively impact their lives.

Airtel hopes the cheaper tariffs will help grow and defend its market share in a business segment dominated by Safaricom.

Safaricom charges Sh4 a minute to call within and outside its network between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. and Sh2 a minute for rest of the hours.

Rivaling companies like Airtel, and Orange have complained that Safaricom’s dominance stifles competition. Safaricom has dismissed accusations it hampers competition, saying it does not abuse its dominance.
