Commodity Prices Relatively Friendly to Kenyan Households

Kenyan households are currently enjoying affordable and reduced commodity prices on some of the main items needed for daily consumption.

I visited one of Eastmatt Supermarket outlets in Nairobi just to have a look on these basic commodity prices. As compared to two months ago where a 500ml packet of milk was being retailed at 65 shillings, the same quantity of Molo milk was on Tuesday selling at 50 shillings while Pascha milk stood at 48 shillings.

A kilogram of Eastmatt rice was being sold at 110 shillings where by a kilogram of brown sugar, on the other hand, retailing at 110 shillings.

It is known that most Kenyan households rely on maize for Ugali, which is consumed almost on a daily basis. From a price of 135 shillings for a 2-kilogram packet of maize flour two months ago, the same quantity of Shujaa maize meal, Cosmo maize flour, Soko maize flour and even Pema maze flour are currently retailing at 90 shillings.

For wheat lovers, a 2-kilogram packet of Pembe wheat flour was going at 125 shillings, Ndovu and Golden baking flour as seen at the same outlet was being sold at 124 shillings while Elliot’s wheat flour at 122 shillings.

A bunch of Sukuma wiki is being sold at 10 shillings by most vegetable vendors as there is plenty of the vegetable in the market. Cabbages too are retailing at reasonable prices of as low as 20 shillings for one cabbage.

Tomato prices keep ranging as some vendors sell them depending on the sizes, which range from 5 shillings for the smallest tomato to 15 shillings for one. Round onions, on the other hand, were seen to be going at 5 shilling for each.

On fuel, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics released fuel prices for the month of August/September and a 13 kilogram of cooking gas is currently being sold at 850 shillings.
