Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom have been contracted by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to provide a secure conduit to transmit the encrypted results between the Polling Stations to its Data Centre.

The IEBC entered into Standard Level Agreement(s) with the MNOs, to ensure that IEBC delivers on its national duty to the nation.

In achieving this, the IEBC  divided the country into zones with respective MNOs tasked to provide connectivity between the KIEMS devices at the Polling Stations and the IEBC Data Centre.

Telkom Kenya will cover: Siaya, Kisumu, Busia, Bungoma, Kakamega and Vihiga (western Kenya), and Nandi, Laikipia and Nakuru (Rift Valley), Nyandarua (central) and Nairobi.

Airtel will transmit from: Homa Bay, Kisii, Nyamira and Migori (central), Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga and Kiambu (central) and the coastal counties of Taita-Taveta, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa and Kwale.

Safaricom has been allocated: Turkana, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Samburu, Baringo, West Pokot, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu,  Elgeyo-Marakwet, Kericho, Bomet, Narok, Kajiado, Makueni, Machakos, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Meru, and Kitui.

According to the IEBC, the responsibility of MNOs will be to provide a secure conduit to transmit the encrypted results between the Polling Stations to the IEBC’s Data Centre.

The IEBC has provided its own independent equipment and servers, on both ends of the transmission chain -the sending and receiving ends of the transmission process.

“The IEBC remains wholly responsible and in charge of the operationalisation and security of its equipment and servers during this time,” read a statement.

Kenyans go to the polls on Tuesday.
