Telkom has adopted the use of approved eco-friendly re-usable bags as ban on use, manufacture and importation of plastic bags take effect in Kenya.

Telkom’s eco-friendly bags are made of environmentally-friendly polypropylene raw materials .

Non-woven bags can be reused, washed, have a beautiful appearance, and are durable. They are completely biodegradable, and have an indoor service life for upto five years, so as to reduce on environmental pollution.

Unlike  polyethylene plastic bags which have a very strong stability, are difficult to degrade, cause soil and air pollution, the non-woven bags not only bring the invisible advertising benefits, they also reduce the harm of “white pollution (a term coined to describe the unsightly tumbleweed of plastic bags blowing around on our streets).

Last week, the Kenyan High Court dismissed manufacturers’ lobby application to suspend ban on plastic bags that took effect on Monday. The court said the need to conserve the environment outweighed commercial interests.

The ministry in a gazette notice has banned the use, manufacture and importation of plastic bags.
