Food prices are dropping but Eldoret remains expensive

Food prices across the country continue to decline among various agriculture commodities with enhanced rainfall leading to increased productivity.

Food Inflation in Kenya is expected to be 8.80 percent by the end of this quarter, according to Trading Economics global macro models and analysts expectations. “Looking forward, we estimate Food Inflation in Kenya to stand at 8.00 in 12 months time.”

In this weekly review, most prices in Nairobi have remained stable unlike in Eldoret which has witnessed a rise in various commodities.

A 64-kilogram bag of tomatoes was retailing highest in Eldoret at 9,500 shillings and lowest in Malindi at 3,000 shillings.

A 126-kilogram bag of cabbages, on the other hand, was being sold as follows: 2,300 shillings in Mombasa, 2,240 shillings in Malindi, 2,000 shillings in Wajir, 1,800 shillings in Kitale, 1,500 shillings in Nairobi and Kisumu respectively, 1,400 shillings in Eldoret and 1,200 shillings in Nakuru.

A 138-kilogram bag of carrots was being sold as follows: 5,600 shillings in Kitale, 3,800 shillings in Malindi, 2,700 shillings in Mombasa, 2,500 shillings in Kisumu, 2,400 shillings in Wajir, 2,300 shillings in Nairobi and 1,800 shillings in Nakuru and Eldoret respectively.
