Voting Fails To Kick Off in Most Parts of Kenya

Kenya goes to the polls today ( 26th October 2017) in a controversial repeat Presidential poll that has been boycotted by the main opposition chief Raila Odinga.

A quick check by the Solo Directory team has revealed that voting is yet to kick off in most parts of the country especially those perceived to be opposition’s strongholds.

No poling station has opened in Migori County after returning officers failed to turn up to puck voting materials over security reasons. The same scenes have been replicated in Siaya, Kisumu and some parts of Nyamira.

In Nairobi, Kibera Constituency looks like a deserted slum with no one on the streets except the heavy presence of armed police officers. No poling station is open and no poll official has turned up.

In Bungoma County, some polling stations are open but nobody has turned up or show interest of voting. On the eve of voting, five returning officers downed their tools citing a threat on their lives.

In most parts of Kisii and Nyamira, most polling stations have remained closed. In Mombasa, polling stations are open but no one has turned out to vote.

However, voting in ongoing in most parts of Trans-Nzoia County, Uasin Gishu, Kiambu, Nakuru, Murang’a, Meru, Kiambu, Tharaka Nithi, Laikipia, Narok and Kajiado Counties.

On Wednesday, the opposition, National Super Alliance (now National Resistance Movement), called on their supporters to boycott the polls telling them to hold “prayers” away from polling stations.

Though it is still too early to rule out the possibility of voting taking part in most parts of the country, in Migori, Kisumu, Siaya and Kibera, it is unlikely that voting will take place.

The independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chair Wafula Chebukati had indicated that the commission will postpone the polls in areas where the exercise will not take place.
