Best 2017 KCPE candidate scores 455 marks

The top Candidate for the 2017 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations has managed to score a total of 455 marks out of the total 500.

The Cabinet Secretary, who released the results at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development on Tuesday said that no single case of malpractice was reported in the 2017 KCPE and therefore all candidates who sat for the exam will receive results.

“All candidates will be able to receive their results this year as no single case of exam malpractice was reported,” said Dr. Matiang’i.

Matiang’i disclosed that the form one selection for candidates is expected to be complete by December 12th so as to give room for the launch of free secondary education from January 2018.

The CS said six special needs candidates scored more than 400 marks and that the best one had 426. The number of those who scored less than 100 marks decreased by 4,000, from 6,000 last year.

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) Chairman Prof. George Magoha said that the total number of candidate who registered for this year’s exams was 1,003,556, where 993,718 managed to sit for the exams while 10,000 missed out.

Magoha noted that due to enhanced security, examinations were conducted in a very conducive environment which in turn led to credible results.

In a move to boost the efficiency of examination marking, the government bought 20 machines at the cost of 100 million shillings to mark these year’s KCPE exams and according to Magoha, the new machines were 99.98 percent accurate.

This year, 50.9 percent of the total candidates comprised of boys against 49.8 percent girls.

KNEC contracted 20,000 teachers to mark the examinations of 1,003,556 candidates across 28,566 centres.
