The ministry of Mining has identified six quarry sites in Kenya which have recorded an increased number of quarry site accidents and illegal activities on quarry sites with little regard for the health and safety of miners and the surrounding environment.

According to the ministry “These illegal activities are being conducted in counties across the country where sand harvesting and construction minerals occur. These illegal practices have led to loss of property and lives. The counties with the most prevalent of such activities are; Makueni, Kajiado, Embu, Nairobi, Kitui, Isiolo.”

In order to curb this menace, the Ministry of Mining has deployed inspectors of mines to all affected zones to work together with officers from the National Environment Management Authority, occupational health and safety officials, the relevant county government officers and the respective county administration structures to carry out an audit of all quarry and sand harvesting sites.
