Top 10 Most Downloaded Apps in Kenya

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) sector statistics report for the first quarter of the financial year 2017/18 revealed that the number of mobile subscriptions in Kenya stood at 41.0 million up from 40.2 million reported in the preceding quarter, marking a growth of 1.9 percent over the period.

Subsequently mobile penetration rose by 1.7 percentage points to reach 90.4 percent from 88.7 percent recorded during the previous quarter.

Kenya’s internet penetration stands at 51 million users. With social media tools being among the most downloaded tools, here are the top ten most downloaded tools in 2017:

  • Uber – most Kenyans use this app to request for rides in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu. The app topped the list of the most downloaded in 2017.
  • Instagram – Common for Kenyans who love sharing photos and moments.
  • Facebook – Common in Kenya for social interactions. Of late, businesses have taken to Facebook to sell their products and services.
  • Branch – an app that enables Kenyans to access quick loans without having a guarantor.
  • Facebook Messenger – for sending and receiving messages without having to log into Facebook account.
  • Trucaller – an app that enables people know the names of those calling them. It is also instrumental in blocking calls one does not want.
  • Tala – same as branch.
  • Facebook Lite – for most android phones.
  • Whatsapp – common in Kenya with more than 12 million users.
  • Opera Mini – for browsing.
