Co-operative Bank of Kenya has kicked off an exercise to enroll senior citizens in government’s Inua Jamii Program.

Co-op is among several other banks that have been selected by the governments as channels of disbursement of funds to senior citizens aged 70 and above.

Through this program, the governments will be remitting monthly payments to the elderly in society for their welfare.

The Inua Jamii initiative is part of National Social Protection Policy (2011), which has expanded the benefits of Older Persons Cash Transfer Program to include citizens who are 70 years and above.

The program aims at delivering unconditional social assistance in terms of cash transfers of 4,000 shillings every 2 months to 500,000 senior citizens across the 47 Counties and is in line with the Kenya Vision 2030 aim of providing a high quality of life for all its citizens by the year 2030.

Delivery of social assistance in form of cash transfers to the most vulnerable 70 years and above senior Citizens has been one of the objectives of the Government under the Social Protection of the Vision 2030’s Social Pillar.

It is envisioned that by providing the bi-monthly, regular and unconditional cash transfers to the 70years and above Senior Citizens, this will provide them with the much needed social support required to access social services in health and other amenities.

In addition, the Government is also set to provide National Health Insurance Fund cards that will be a value-added complementary support to the Inua Jamii 70 and above cash transfer program.

It is, however, emerging that most senior citizens in the country are unaware of the program and the majority of them have failed to register for the same. The youth are now being called upon to assist their parents and grandparents who are 70 years and above register for the program.

Registration is easy. For instance, one can drop in at any Co-operative Bank of Kenya branch and will be taken through the registration process.
