Firebase Dynamic Links is Here – Goodbye Google URL Shortener

Google URL Shortener, a service launched in 2009 that allowed web enthusiasts to shorten and share links on other web platforms easily has sadly been terminated by Google.

According to the company’s announcement, beginning April 13, new users who have never used the service will not be able to access it through the goo.gl console. The dashboard allows one to paste longer URL for shortening.

A typical user can see the already pasted URLs along with the number of times the link has been clicked.

The service will continue to function for the existing goo.gl links for another year until March 3, 2019, when the console will finally be terminated.

“After March 30, 2019, all links will continue to redirect to the intended destination. Your existing short links will not be migrated to the Firebase console; however, you will be able to export your link information from the goo.gl console,” the announcement stated.

The move to shut down the service follows the existence of other numerous URL shortening sites like Bitly, Ow.ly among others. Nevertheless, Google recommends another one of its products; Firebase Dynamics Links.

Firebase Dynamics Links, according to Google are smart URLs that can be used for any scale, are free forever and it enables you to “send existing and potential users to any location within iOS or Android apps.”

Google, for years now, has had an unprecedented habit of terminating services. For one it ended Google reader, then followed Picasa. This time though, it is doing it for a good reason. Shortening services are flooding the market.

That is why the company believes that the way people fish for content has changed and Firebase Dynamic Links is the way to go. The new service aligns itself with what Google believes in how people search for content and regarding the dynamic platform detection and links that survive the app installation process, it is the best.

Google certainly has high hopes for Firebase Dynamic Links and will be hoping that users like it too.
