Kenyan Farmers to Benefit from a $10 Billion Mechanization Project

Kenyan farmers are set to benefit from a mechanization project that will see them ease their labor requirements and help in the preservation of farm produce.

This project came about through a 10 billion US Dollar agreement signed between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Indian government for mechanization.

According to the Principal Secretary State Department of Agriculture Richard Lesiyampe, the move was reached at so as to mechanize the agriculture sector in Kenya with the appropriate technology and equipment.

The agreement will see each county distributed with the appropriate equipment and technology that suits their farming.

Speaking during the launch of the National Potato Conference and Trade Fair 2018, Lesiyampe disclosed that Kenyan small-scale farmers are in dire need of a ninety horsepower tractors, thus they will be able to get much from the agreement.

“We have also requested the County governments to provide us with the equipment’s and technology needed for their respective counties,” said the PS.

He noted that counties like Nyandarua, Nakuru, and Elgeyo Marakwet should put potato processing equipment’s in their requirements since they are large scale producers of potatoes in Kenya.

Lesiyampe further said that although mechanization was inevitable, farmers benefiting from the equipment’s needed to identify what seems appropriate for them that will work efficiently and can be relied on a long-term basis.
