Kenya’s future in terms of oil prospects seems bright after Tullow, a UK petroleum explorer in Kenya announced plans to drill 300 more wells in Turkana.

The company has already invited bids for the tender to drill the wells as the country gears towards actualizing its dream to export oil to other countries.

Currently, Turkana is producing some 2,000 barrels per day that are being stored at Kenya Petroleum Refinery in Mombasa. The target is to have 400,000 barrels that will feel an oil tanker, ready for export.

“Tullow Kenya B.V. is currently planning the foundation phase of the Kenya development, which comprises drilling and completion of approximately 300 wells,” stated the company.

The government has also laid down the revenue sharing plan between the national government, county government and the community in Turkana.

“The Kenya development plan is progressing well and the project remains on track for FID in late 2019. FEED and ESIA work for the upstream Foundation Stage is now underway, following the award of the upstream FEED and Integrated Project Management contracts to WorleyParsons in May 2018,” said Tullow on its website.

Following the agreement of the terms of The Petroleum Bill, the transfer of stored crude oil from Turkana to Mombasa by road commenced on 3 June 2018 in a ceremony attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto, the Turkana County Governor, and Turkana MPs.

The first truck arrived at the KPRL Refinery in Mombasa on 7 June 2018, where the oil will be stored for future export. Initially, the trucks will transport approximately 600 bopd and this is expected to steadily increase to 2,000 bopd once the Early Oil Production System is fully operational and production testing commences from the Amosing production facility.
