The recent 8 percent increase on VAT has brought a heated debate between the government, millers, and consumers as for the price of a 2-kilogram bag of maize flour is concerned.
A 90-kilogram bag of maize is being sold at an average market price of 2,144 shillings with Kisumu having the highest market price of 2,600 shillings while Eldoret town selling at 1,600 shillings.
A 115-kilogram bag of Green Maize, on the other hand, is being sold as follows in selected towns: 4,020 shillings in Embu, 4,000 shillings in Mombasa, 2,500 shillings in Isiolo, 2,400 shillings in Nairobi, 2,300 shillings in Kisumu, 1,800 shillings in Kakamega and 1,400 shillings in Nakuru and Eldoret respectively.

A 90-kilogram bag of Sorghum is being sold at 5,850 shillings in Eldoret, 4,500 shillings in Isiolo, 4,000 shillings in Kakamega, 3,600 shillings in Nairobi, 3,500 shillings in Nakuru, 3,200 shillings in Kisumu, 2,250 shillings in Mombasa and 2,000 shillings in Embu.
