One person has died as several others suffered injuries after an eight-storey building collapsed at Barani area in Malindi.

The building which was under construction collapsed on Friday dawn. An estimated, three others, are yet to be recovered as Red Cross said seven people had been rescued. The building housed people in its lower floors despite incomplete construction. It fell on neighboring residential houses and a petrol station.

“Several people are still trapped here. We need more rescue teams,” an area resident told the media as onlookers stared helplessly.

Onlookers alleged that the building collapsed following the ongoing heavy rains that have hit parts of the Coastal region since Wednesday.

Authorities, however, said it is unclear what caused the building to collapse. A large part of the coastal region has been alerted to brace for floods as the heavy downpour continues.

Disaster management units on location say there are an unknown number of people trapped under the rubble.
