Secret SMS Reveals Cover-up of Misappropriation of Funds at the Helm of NHIF

National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) top officials landed into trouble after text messages exchanged between them hit the limelight. The text messages commonly referred to as SMS revealed plans to deny investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) crucial documents that related to a contract issued to Webtribe Limited.

They nervously struggled to avoid the glaring cameras as every cameraman sought to have a sharp shot to deliver to Kenyans of the men accused of stealing from the sick at the helm of the NHIF.

Court documents showed that the NHIF bosses, CEO Geoffrey Mwangi and Wilbert Kurgat who is the Director of Finance, landed into trouble with the State because of an incriminating text message sent by Mwangi on 21st November at 11.46am directing Kurgat not to provide documents to the investigators.

“Hi, do not give those guys. Tell its part of vouchers they took from your office. They also need to come to me,” read one of the incriminating sms allegedly from Mwangi’s phone that was submitted before the court. ”Ok”, Kurgat replied.

The CEO allegedly went further to send another message saying “Do not give them, tell them you are looking for them, they give you time and they need to inform me. Actually, tell them they took them.’’
The alleged communication painted an image of a man desperate to cover up information that only leads to more suspense on whether there could be more than already suspected as Kenyans poured into social media platforms to express their disappointment in the current Government. Most Kenyans have since termed NHIF as a cash cow used by the Government to loot from Kenyans.
